For most of us, when we think of avocados our mouths begin to water at the thought of fresh guacamole or smearing it over our morning toast. We’ve long known it's a delicious and healthy thing to eat, but did you know it can be turned into an oil?
Even better, did you know it's good for your skin?
The word is spreading on avocado oil for skin health, with uses ranging from improving dry skin to even potentially helping in the healing of wounds.
One of the many natural products used in Premium Pacific’s Mailelani range, avocado oil is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins A, D and E, and is attributed with very high skin penetration and rapid absorption.
With its high level of vitamin E, avocado oil can reduce itching and skin inflammation and is also beneficial in softening rough and cracked patches. One study found that a cream containing avocado oil and vitamin B12 improved symptoms of psoriasis after 12 weeks of treatment.
Avocado oil also contains sterolins. Sterolins are natural steroids that are said to soften the skin and help reduce the appearance of age spots. They do not have the negative effects of pharmaceutical steroids and may also be effective in boosting collagen production.
In addition to providing the skin with moisture, the antioxidants found in avocado oil can help soothe sunburned skin. In fact, due to its high concentration of anti-inflammatory oleic acid, avocado oil can be applied topically to ease discomfort caused by all manner of skin conditions.
So, the not so humble avocado, just got even more impressive. Proving it’s not just good on the inside, but the outside too.
